What Is the Sphere in Las Vegas?

The Sphere is a music and entertainment venue built around immersive technology: a wraparound 16K LED screen, spatial audio and 4D effects such as moving haptic seats. It opened on Sept. 29, 2023, after a reported $2.3 billion build, and sits directly behind The Venetian Resort.

Construction began in September 2018 on the project, which had been announced earlier that year as the MSG Sphere. The venue opened its doors to the public with the legendary band U2 launching a 40-date residency, U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere. A week later, director Darren Aronofsky's Postcard From Earth, a film created exclusively for the venue, premiered as the first production in The Sphere Experience series.

Who Owns the Sphere

In April 2023, the company then known as Madison Square Garden Entertainment Corp. was renamed Sphere Entertainment Co. and spun off its traditional venue business as a separate company that took the MSG Entertainment name; Sphere Entertainment kept the Sphere. The project was developed under the Madison Square Garden umbrella since it was announced in 2018, which is why it carried the MSG Sphere name during construction before the branding was shortened to Sphere ahead of opening. The company has also announced plans to bring a second Sphere to Abu Dhabi, but the Las Vegas venue remains its flagship.

Sphere Capacity and Design

The Sphere seats 17,600 people and holds about 20,000 at full standing capacity, according to Sphere Entertainment. The building stands roughly 366 feet tall and 516 feet wide, making it visible from most of the Strip corridor.

Inside, the venue stacks nine levels, including a basement level that houses the VIP club, with 23 suites spread across the third and fifth floors. Around 10,000 of the seats are haptic seats that move and vibrate in sync with what's on screen. The audience wraps around two-thirds of the room, with the stage occupying the remaining third.

Inside the Sphere and the Exosphere

Inside the Sphere, the LED screen covers roughly 160,000 square feet, rising above and behind the stage so the picture fills your entire field of view. The venue's audio system uses beamforming technology with about 167,000 speaker drivers hidden behind the display, so sound is aimed at seats rather than blasted across the room.

The outside of the building is a separate attraction. Sphere Las Vegas Schedule: 2026 Shows and Residencies

The Sphere runs two kinds of programming: multi-week artist residencies in the evenings and The Sphere Experience, the venue's own film-based production, during the day. Current and Upcoming Residencies

As of July 2026, Kenny Chesney wrapped up an early-summer run, Backstreet Boys return for a late-summer residency, and Carín León takes over in September. The Eagles continue their long-running residency through December, and Metallica opens an extended run in fall 2026 that continues into 2027 — the band's first Las Vegas residency.

The Wizard of Oz at Sphere

The Wizard of Oz at Sphere is the current headline production in The Sphere Experience slot. It reworks the 1939 classic for the venue's wraparound screen and 4D effects, putting you inside the tornado rather than in front of it. Because showings run during the day and tickets are separate from concert residencies, it has become the practical choice for visitors who want to experience the venue's technology without planning around a headliner's schedule. How to Get Sphere Tickets

Every concert and Sphere Experience showing sells tickets through the official website. For residency dates that sell out, or when you want to compare prices for a specific night and section, resale marketplaces are the alternative.

Sphere Seating Chart and Capacity

Sphere Las Vegas Bag Policy

The Sphere is a "no bag" facility: large bags, backpacks and oversized purses are not allowed inside. The venue does allow small purses, clutches and fanny packs no larger than approximately 6 inches by 6 inches by 2 inches, plus medically necessary bags and diaper bags.

The Sphere itself doesn't run a bag or coat check, so if you arrive with something that doesn't meet the policy, your only on-site option is a paid self-service locker (operated by Binbox) that you rent from your phone. Lockers are limited and can fill up on busy nights, so don't count on one — the smoothest approach is arriving with a small clutch or nothing at all, or leaving extra items at your hotel's bell desk or your car. Sphere Parking and Transportation

Parking at the Sphere is limited, so secure a spot ahead of time rather than betting on a drive-up space. Getting to the venue without a car is often the easiest option. Can you buy a sphere ticket at the door?

While it's recommended to buy Sphere tickets online before your visit, tickets can be purchased onsite at the Sphere concierge, which opens one hour prior to show time. Walk-up availability is never guaranteed, though: residency shows from major headliners can sell out well before show day, and the concierge only sells what's left. Can I visit the Sphere without a ticket?

You can't walk into the Sphere just to look around; entry requires a ticket to a concert or a Sphere Experience showing. The Sphere is cashless and accepts credit cards and mobile payment services such as Google Pay and Apple Pay. If you arrive with cash, you can use a Reverse ATM kiosk to convert it into a prepaid debit card that works anywhere in the venue; the kiosks are located on levels 2, 4 and 6 near the escalators. Cell phone charging stations sit in those same areas, which helps on a night when you're likely to record a lot of video. Budget a few extra minutes before the show if you need either one.

What items are not allowed inside the Sphere?

Large bags, backpacks, laptops, tablets, cameras, camera equipment and selfie sticks are not permitted inside the Sphere, and outside food and beverages are prohibited as well, though clear, soft, empty water bottles are allowed. The Sphere doesn't provide a bag or coat check; the only on-site storage is a set of paid self-service lockers (Binbox), which are limited and aren't guaranteed, so plan to travel light. Are pets allowed in the Sphere?

Pets are off-limits at the Sphere, and only trained service animals are allowed inside. If you or someone in your party needs to bring a service animal to an event, contact the venue's Accessibility Services Department before the show so the team can prepare. Reaching out in advance also speeds up your entry at the door, since staff will already have your accommodation on file rather than sorting it out at security while the line builds behind you.

Is smoking allowed in the Sphere?

No. Smoking, vaping and the use of electronic cigarettes are all prohibited inside the Sphere under Nevada regulations, and the venue enforces the rule strictly. There are no designated smoking areas within the building, so plan to smoke before you enter.
