The national championship of US golf, the 124th US Open, was played from June 13-16 at the Pinehurst Resort & Country Club Course No. 2 at Pinehurst, North Carolina, and it was the third of the four majors on the PGA Tour in 2024.

Scottie Scheffler won The Masters at Augusta National, Augusta, Georgia, from April 8-14, while Xander Schauffele won the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club, Louisville, Kentucky from May 13-19. Scheffler (No. 1) and Schauffele (No. 2) entered the US Open as the top two ranked golfers on the PGA Tour.

The US Open Championship was the 1,000th championship held by the United States Golf Association (USGA) in the esteemed organization's history.

2024 US Open Golf Qualifying

A grand total of 156 golfers opened up play in the 2024 US Open Golf Pinehurst on Thursday on the par-70 course. Thirteen players in the tournament were from the relatively new LIV Golf, including veterans Phil Mickelson and Sergio García, Bryson Dechambeau, 2014 US Open winner Martin Kaymer, Dustin Johnson, and Brooks Koepka. Kaymer won the tournament here at Pinehurst Golf Course No. 2.

The top 74 players after Thursday’s and Friday’s 36 rounds made the cut to continue playing Saturday and Sunday in the tournament. But how did these 156 players make US Open Golf Qualifying in 2024?

Dubbed “Golf’s Longest Day,” Final Qualifying for this third Major was played out over 13 sites across the globe, with 10 sites in the USA and Canada hosting play on that final “longest day,” Monday, June 3. The format was stroke-play over 36 holes, with playoffs employed if necessary to break any ties.

A couple of veterans who qualified for the US Open through Final Qualifying play were Webb Simpson and Matt Kuchar. And, a four-time DII collegiate All-American and science teacher from Colorado, Colin Prater, also made the 2024 US Open cut.

Golfers earn the right to play in Final Qualifying by either moving in in 18-local Qualifying or through several merit-based categories. And many players qualified by earning special exemptions into the 2024 US Open Championship, including Tiger Woods and LIV golfers, Brooks Koepka, Cam Smith, Bryson Dechambeau, and legend Phil Mickelson.

Amateur or professional golfers holding a 0.4 handicap index or lower can register to play for a sacred spot in the US Open. Amateurs Ashton McCulloch and Jackson Buchanan both made the US Open Golf Qualifying in 2024.

Where Was the 2024 US Championship Held?

The 2024 US Open Championship was held at the Pinehurst Golf Resort in Pinehurst, North Carolina, on Course No. 2. The resort has nine different 18-hole golf courses, and this particular course in the Tar Heel State has hosted the US Open four times and is scheduled to host it again in 2029, 2035, 2041, and 2047.

Pinehurst has also played host to the US Women’s Open, the PGA Championship, the Ryder Cup, and three US Amateur Championships.

Pinehurst Course No. 2—7,569 yards— was designed by Donald J. Ross and Robert Trent Jones (renovation in 1974) and Ben Crenshaw and Bill Moore (renovation in 2010). The purse this year was $21,500,00.

Red-Hot Scheffler Was Oddsmakers Big Favorite Going In

Few golfers have had such short odds hedging into PGA Tournaments as legend Tiger Woods, but a new kid on the course, Scheffler has been on the top of all oddsmaker's Futures boards lately. And with five PGA tourney wins heading into the US Open Championship—something Jack Nicklaus and Woods couldn't even say—Scheffler came in as the huge favorite with odds as low as +280 before he teed off.

According to Sports Odds History, Scheffler entered as the shortest-odds favorite in the tournament since Woods in 2009. Scheffler was priced at +375 before winning the Memorial Trophy and at +300 when the opening odds for the tourney were posted.

The other favorites heading in included Schauffele (10/1), Rory McIlroy (11/1), Collin Morikawa (16/1), Viktor Holland (20/1), Bryson DeChambeau (20/1), Brooks Koepka (22/1), Ludvig Åberg (22/1), Jon Rahm (25/1)—who pulled out pre-tournament with an injury—Tommy Fleetwood (40/1) and Hideki Matsuyama (40/1).

The No. 1 ranked player in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) has performed very poorly in the US Open Championship, winning only three times—all three times being Woods (2000, 2002, 2008). Scheffler has been ranked No. 1 for 64 weeks now.

2024 US Open Championship First-Round Review

The opening round of the 2024 US Open teed off on Thursday, June 13, with Patrick Cantlay and Rory McIlroy tied atop the leaderboard, shooting 5-under 65s. There was just one golfer sitting a stroke back, Ludvig Åberg (-4), with Matthieu Pavon and Bryson Dechambeau sitting two strokes off the lead (-3) after firing 67's at Pinehurst No. 2.

There were three players sitting at -2—Tony Finau, Tyrell Hatton, and Akshay Bhatia—with S.H. Kim, Corey Conners, Sergio García, Sam Bennett, and Aaron Rai all tied for 9th place and in the hunt at -1 (69).

Two players everyone cares about sat behind the pack with Scheffler at +1 (71) and tied for 34th and the 48-year-old Woods sitting at +4 (74) tied for 86th place and nine strokes off the lead. Scheffler was making his first appearance at Pinehurst and was over par for the first time in 2024, while Woods had his 12th straight round in a Major over par, the longest streak in his illustrious career.

2024 US Open Championship Second-Round Review

Round 2 of the 2024 US Open Championship was held on Friday, June 14, and was televised exclusively on Peacock. After being tied for the lead on Thursday, McIlroy had a disappointing round of 72 to end the day at -3, but he was definitely still in the hunt.

DeChambeau and Detry both finished at 4-under par, with the former shooting a 69 after having a 67 on Thursday and the latter firing a 67 after shooting a 69 on Thursday. They both stood in a three-way tie for 2nd-place with Cantlay, just one stroke from the surprise leader.

And who was that surprise leader after two rounds? None other than 24-year-old Swede Ludvig Åberg, who followed up his great Round 1 on Thursday (66) with a 69 on Friday to hold a one-stroke lead at -4.

Three players were tied two strokes back (Finau, Pavon, McIlroy) at -3, with Matsuya alone in 8th place at -2. Seven golfers sat at -1 and four strokes off the lead after Round 2 (Tom Kim, Tim Wilding, Schauffle, Zac Blair, Conners, Tyrell Hatton, and Bhatia).

Scheffler fired a 74 (+4) to finish at 145 (+5) after two mediocre days of play, just making the cut, along with 73 other golfers playing in the Major tournament at Pinehurst.

Two big-name golf legends who didn't make the cut line (+5) after playing on Thursday were Woods, who shot a 73 Friday after a 74 on Thursday (147, +7) and Mickelson (79-76, +15). The most dramatic shot of the tournament came from Francesco Molinari, who needed a hole-in-one to make the cut, and sure enough, the 41-year-old Italian did just that.

2024 US Open Championship Third-Round Review

The third round of the 2024 US Open, played on Saturday, June 15, saw DeChambeau try to separate himself from the pack. He did so, shooting a 3-under 67 to finish at -7 and three strokes ahead of three golfers in second place. How did he do it? With some impeccable putting, with DeChambeau having an amazing 12 one-putt greens on the day.

The three players tied at -4 in second place heading into Sunday's final round were Pavon, McIlroy, and Cantlay, shooting 69, 69, and 70, respectively. Two golfers sat at -2 when all the sand cleared, Matsuyama and the leader after two rounds, Åberg, who shot a disappointing 3-over par on the day to lose his lead.

Two players also sat at -1 in Hatton and Finau, with Morikawa with Morikawa, Conners, and Kim all at Even (210) after 72 holes. So, 11 golfers were even better and felt like they had a shot.

One guy who had another frustrating day was pre-tourney favorite and the No. 1 ranked golfer in the world, Scheffler, who was +1 on the day and ended at +6, 13 strokes off the lead. Molinari, who needed that miracle hole-in-one on Friday just to keep golfing, was +7 on the day to finish at +12 and 18 strokes off the lead with 18 holes to go.

2024 US Open Championship Fourth-Round Review

The final round of the 2024 US Open was completed on Sunday, June 16, and it all went down to the last and 18th hole, where DeChambeau successfully chipped out of the bunker from 55 yards out to set up a four-foot putt for a +1 on the day (274) and the win. DeChambeau won $4,300,000 and his second US Open after having won in 2020 at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, NY, also carding a -6 over the 72 holes.

After not winning in 3,598 days, McIlroy looked like he may have forced a playoff, shooting a 69 to finish at -5 (275), but DeChambeau came up with what he called the best shot of his life to put him in a position to get the victory. Two golfers finished tied for 3rd place (Finay, Cantlay), with Pavon alone in 5th place (-3) and Matsuyama alone in 6th place (-2).

Schaeffler and Henley tied for 7th place (-1), with Sam Burns, Davis Thompson, and Conners all tied for 9th place, sitting at Even par. Here is the shot that essentially gave DeChambeau the win.
