Cyclones everywhere: Iowa State football is named the “Cyclones” for a reason. The name dates to 1895, when Iowa experienced an unusually high number of storms. At the same time, the then-Iowa Agriculture College won against Northwestern University with an incredible 36-0.
The fans are currently particularly proud of their former quarterback, Brock Purdy. He will play in the Super Bowl on February 11th because he is now playing successfully for the San Francisco 49ers – from Mr. Irrelevant to MVP (Most Valuable Player) Candidate. Will this make him one of the youngest QBs ever to win the Super Bowl?
The cyclonic team sweeps all fans off their feet – don't miss any thunderstorm games. Find out how to get cheap tickets to Iowa State Football at TicketX.
Want to be Cy? Bang, sing & ding dong
Iowa State fans know how to cheer for their team – there's singing, banging, and ding-donging. Nobody can ignore the famous fight song. Even fans of rival football teams are impressed by the chanting.
Secured tickets for the Iowa State football team? Then you need to know these lyrics:
Oh we will fight, fight, fight for Iowa State,
And maybe her colors ever fly.
Yes, we will fight with might for Iowa State,
With a will to do or die,
Rah! Rah! Rah!
Loyal sons forever true,
And we will fight the battle through.
And when we hit that line we'll hit it hard
ev'ry yard for I.S.U.
Additionally, Iowa State fans sing “Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond between the football games’ third and fourth quarters when the Cyclones are ahead.
But that’s not all: the “big bang” is still coming. The Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity members traditionally fire a cannon after every Cyclone touchdown or field goal, on kickoffs, and during the Cyclone Marching Band’s playing of the “Star Spangled Banner.” Another cherished custom entails the sounding of the Victory Bell following every football victory in Ames. This iconic bell has adorned the grounds of Iowa State University for over a century.
