Born on April 19, 1982, in San Francisco, Alexandra Dawn Wong is an American actress and comedienne named as one of Time 100’s most influential people in both 2020 and 2023, and who made history winning that aforementioned Primetime Emmy award a year ago.

Best known for her leading role as Amy Lau in Netflix’s Beef, Wong was also the first Asian woman to win a lead acting Emmy at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards. Wong has also won two Golden Globe Awards and is nominated for a Grammy Award in 2026 for Best Comedy Album (Single Lady).

Wong is considered one of the best stand-up comedians of the past two decades, blending genuine insight and humanity with laugh-out-loud humor that ranges from the abstract to the grotesque to the everyday.

On stage, Ali frequently discusses her family background as well as stories about marriage, motherhood, divorce, and everything else in between.

Ali Wong Personal Life

Ali Wong was born in the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco to a Vietnamese mom, Tammy Wong, and a Chinese-American dad, Adolphus Wong. Tammy moved from Huế, South Vietnam (now Vietnam) to the US in 1960 to find employment as a social worker.

Ali graduated from San Francisco University High School in San Francisco in 2000, where she was student body class president. After graduation, she attended UCLA in Los Angeles, where she visited Vietnam in her junior year through a Fulbright program.

Wong married Justin Hakuta in 2014, and the couple had two daughters before getting divorced in 2024 after separating two years earlier. In late 2022, Wong met SNL alum Bill Hader, and the two have attended many awards ceremonies together and are still an item.
