Taylor 13: Taylor Swift and the Economy
by Miranda Carr
Update:
In 2023, Taylor Swift had a remarkable year, and it seems like 2024 is shaping up to be equally memorable. The American singer-songwriter recently broke records after winning Album of The Year on four different occasions. Meanwhile, her journey to stardom is one filled with determination.
Born on December 13, 1989, in Reading, Pennsylvania, Taylor Alison Swift spent her early years with her parents, Scott and Andrea, and brother, Austin. Her journey in music began at a young age, with inspiration from her grandmother, Marjorie Finlay, a professional opera singer.
A few years later, she made the biggest life decision after moving to Tennessee to pursue her musical aspirations. There, she co-wrote songs and aimed to secure a recording contract.
Her debut track, "Tim McGraw," was released during her first year in college. It was only a matter of time before the song reached the top 10 on Billboard's country chart. Over the years, she has featured some of the most prominent artists in the music industry.
Today, the pop sensation has won 14 Grammy awards and was recently named Time's 2023 Person of the Year. According to a recent chart from Statista, she was ranked among the Greats of past and present. Swift sold over 137.5 million singles, being the second-best artist behind Rihanna. She has also reached no. 6 on the list of artists with the highest album sales equivalent.
The Eras Tour
Taylor Swift is currently on her record-breaking Eras Tour and is romantically involved with professional football player - Travis Kelce. She has embarked on the international leg of her Eras Tour journey, hitting the stage for her first of four shows at the Tokyo Dome in Japan on February 7. This marks her return to the Eras Tour since her last performance at Allianz Parque in São Paulo, Brazil, on November 26.
After concluding her shows in Tokyo on February 10, Swift will go to Australia, then Singapore, and continue to various European countries. The international segment of Swift's tour will culminate in London, where she is scheduled to perform in five shows at Wembley Stadium from August 15 to August 20.

In June of the previous year, Swift unveiled a lineup of 50 international tour dates through her social media platforms and official website. Swift commenced her international tour in Mexico City on August 24, 2023, and is set to conclude in London on August 20, 2024, before going to the U.S. and Canada.
Before adding these new screenings, The Eras Tour had already raked in over $100 million in advance ticket sales worldwide. According to Statista, Swift is shaping up to be extraordinary for Swift, with initial projections suggesting she could hit a staggering $2.2 billion in ticket sales for her North American shows.
During the U.S. leg of her tour, Swift has been pulling in an impressive $13 million per night in ticket sales, drawing an average of 72,000 fans to each concert. It is safe to say the Eras Tour has become an economic boom. To get more insight about the Eras Tour date, tickets, and venues, check out this page on Taylor Swift Eras Tour: What To Expect For 2024. The Tortured Poets Department
Mark your calendars for April 19 because Taylor Swift is dropping her highly anticipated 11th album, The Tortured Poets Department (TTPD). With 17 tracks, this album delves into love, heartbreak, and growth.
Meanwhile, collaborations with Post Malone, Florence, and The Machine add flair to what fans call a breakup album. During a break in her Eras Tour between March 9 and May 9, Swift will release the album on April 19.
We can only anticipate how she will integrate the new songs into her three-and-a-half-hour show. Will she surprise fans by including them among her classic hits? Will she introduce a new era? Perhaps she'll kick off the show with tracks from "TTPD." Whatever the case, only time will give the answers to these questions.
NFL
The undeniable presence of Taylor Swift marked the 2023-2024 season. In a thrilling game dominated by defense, the Chiefs triumphed over the San Francisco 49ers in overtime with a final score of 25-22, sealing their victory with a touchdown pass in the game's closing seconds. Following her Tokyo Eras Tour show, Swift jetted off to Las Vegas to catch the Chiefs' showdown against the 49ers, courtesy of the international date line.
Her presence at the Super Bowl sparked various "prop bets," including predictions on how many times CBS would feature her on camera and the shade of lipstick she would wear. The Grammy-winning singer, known for her significant impact on NFL buzz this season, was accompanied by Lana Del Rey and Ice Spice.
According to Apex Marketing, Swift has contributed an impressive $331.5 million in brand value to both the Chiefs and the NFL. Yet, it's not just the NFL benefiting from Swift's influence. Brands associated with her are also reaping the rewards, including unexpected gains for the San Francisco 49ers.

Private Jet Scandal
Whether you are a fan or not, it is undeniable that Taylor Swift influences virtually everything. She was known for causing a rise in U.S. voter registration and is believed to have directly affected local economies through “tourflation.”
Swift has faced significant criticism this time regarding her frequent air travel in the past weeks, with many arguing that it is excessive given the current climate emergency. The widely acclaimed American singer-songwriter is often cited as one of the most frequent users of private jets.
According to a survey by sustainability marketing firm Yard, Swift's private plane emitted approximately 8,300 tonnes of carbon emissions in 2022 - almost 1,184 times the average person's total annual emissions.
While Swift representatives have disputed this figure, stating that she offsets her flights by purchasing carbon credits, some experts have raised doubts about the effectiveness of carbon offsetting measures.
