About Jack White

Born in Detroit Michigan on July 9th, 1975 American artist Jack White produces music songwriting, and singing. He became renowned as a lead singer and guitarist when he performed in the rock duo The White Stripes.

Biography and Childhood

John Anthony Gillis, who became known as Jack White, was born on July 9, 1975, in Detroit, Michigan as the tenth child to be born into the Polish-Scottish Gillis family. His parents Teresa (née Bandyk) and Gorman M. Gillis dedicated themselves to the Catholic Church while his father maintained buildings and his mother worked as an archdiocesan secretary in Detroit.

White received musical exposure from his early years while living in a big family. After finding a drum kit in the attic during first grade he started playing drums before picking up piano and guitar skills. Jack White had a wide musical appreciation which spanned from traditional classical music to iconic rock bands such as The Doors, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin.

White's childhood was marked by his Catholic upbringing, serving as an altar boy and even appearing uncredited in the 1987 movie "The Rosary Murders". He studied business at Cass Technical High School in Detroit while performing drums and trombone with the school band.

When Jack White turned 15, he started a three-year upholstery apprenticeship under family friend Brian Muldoon who showed him punk music and inspired him to start his own band. The lessons learned during this experience eventually shaped his independent music methodology and entrepreneurial activities.

White's path to becoming a musician wasn't always clear. After being admitted to a Wisconsin seminary, White decided music was his calling over the priesthood.

Rise to Fame

Jack White established The White Stripes together with his wife Meg White in 1997. The duo's breakthrough album, White Blood Cells, released in 2001, brought them international fame with the single Fell in Love with a Girl.
